« Return to A Tribute to Senator Mark Hatfield by John Isaacs

Hatfield Remembered

John Isaacs said it perfectly. Hatfield was person of deep principle. He reflected that on War/Peace issues, nuclear weapons and military spending. He was an informed advocate.

That person of deep principle stood tall when the Yahoos among Senate Republicans wanted to strip him of his chairmanship of Senate Appropriations for opposing the reckless Constitutional Amendment to balance the budget. Hatfielld stood firm. To his credit Republican Leader Dole supported him.

Hatfield's perspective is now missing from the Republican Party. It was deeply rooted in the Social Gospel of the Bible, the Old Testament and the New Testament.
