Murphy wins race in NY-20!
Apr 29, 2009
Last Friday, the race for the Congressional seat previously held by now-Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was decided, and another progressive - Scott Murphy (D-NY) will be added to the Congressional ranks.
Quite a victory considering that six weeks before the election, polls showed Republican James Tedisco holding a 20 point lead over the relatively unknown Murphy.
Tedisco conceded on Friday afternoon after the New York Board of Elections’ recount showed Murphy in the lead by 399 votes. Sends a strong message of public support for Obama and progressives in Congress.
Special NY Election Too Close to Call
Apr 01, 2009
Yesterday, New York held its special congressional election to fill the former House seat of now-Senator Kristen Gillibrand. After an intense final week of campaigning, the results are too close to call.
Quite a victory already for Council-endorsed Scott Murphy who, just six weeks ago, was a twenty-point underdog.
Out of 154,000 votes cast, today's reports indicate Murphy leads Republican James Tedisco by 65 votes. As many as 10,000 absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted, and we'll be waiting on the final result for at least several weeks.
Poll Confirms Massa Lead in NY
Oct 10, 2008
A Daily Kos poll out today confirms an earlier poll showing Eric Massa with a solid lead over Rep. Randy Kuhl.
Research 2000 for Daily Kos (10/7-8, likely voters):
Eric Massa (D): 49
Randy Kuhl (R-inc): 42
(MoE: ±5%)
This is good to see. Massa came real close to defeating Kuhl in 2006 with little support from outside his district (other than Council for a Livable World - not that we're bragging). He did it by working hard and assembling a strong grassroots operation. It's nice to see that work paying off this year.
Maffei Holds Solid Lead in Upstate New York
Oct 10, 2008
My instinct was that Dan Maffei held a lead against his Republican opponent to replace retiring Rep. Jim Walsh (R), but not as large a lead as shown in a poll Maffei released this week:
Kiley & Co. (10/2-3, 500 likely voters)
Maffei - 49%
Sweetland - 31%
(MOE ±4%)
Two Democratic Polls Show Council Candidates with 5 Point Leads
Oct 06, 2008
Two polls out today show Council endorsed candidates with solid leads in Minnesota and New York.
The New York poll:
Eric Massa (D): 47
Rep. Randy Kuhl (R-inc): 42
(MoE: ±4.9%)
Massa nearly won against Kuhl with little support from outside the district in 2006. This year he is receiving significant support from the national party, and Kuhl is not running a vigorous campaign. In fact, Kuhl is currently refusing to debate Massa. When an incumbent refuses to debate, that's a sure sign their campaign is in trouble.
Learn more about Eric Massa here.
The Minnesota poll:
Ashwin Madia (D): 44
Erik Paulsen (R): 39
David Dillon (IP): 8
(MoE: ±4.9%)
This is an open-seat race to replace retiring Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad. Madia argues that his positions are actually closer to the moderate Ramstad's than the hyper-conservative Paulsen's are. Paulsen has charged that Madia, the 30 year old son of Indian immigrants who also served in Iraq, does not have the "suburban life experience" needed to properly represent Minnesotans. Whatever that means.
