Murphy wins race in NY-20!
Apr 29, 2009

Last Friday, the race for the Congressional seat previously held by now-Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was decided, and another progressive - Scott Murphy (D-NY) will be added to the Congressional ranks.

Quite a victory considering that six weeks before the election, polls showed Republican James Tedisco holding a 20 point lead over the relatively unknown Murphy.

Tedisco conceded on Friday afternoon after the New York Board of Elections’ recount showed Murphy in the lead by 399 votes. Sends a strong message of public support for Obama and progressives in Congress.

Special NY Election Too Close to Call
Apr 01, 2009

Yesterday, New York held its special congressional election to fill the former House seat of now-Senator Kristen Gillibrand. After an intense final week of campaigning, the results are too close to call.

Quite a victory already for Council-endorsed Scott Murphy who, just six weeks ago, was a twenty-point underdog.

Out of 154,000 votes cast, today's reports indicate Murphy leads Republican James Tedisco by 65 votes. As many as 10,000 absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted, and we'll be waiting on the final result for at least several weeks.

Scott Murphy

Scott Murphy

The special election in New York’s 20th Congressional District has become a toss-up.  With just days left before votes are cast on March 31st, Democrat Scott Murphy, a political newcomer, is within striking distance of defeating veteran State Assemblyman James Tedisco (R).

The election was triggered when Gov. David Patterson appointed Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to the Senate seat that Hillary Clinton vacated when she was appointed Secretary of State.  Gillibrand won her Congressional seat by upsetting four-term incunmbent Republican John Sweeney in 2006.  Prior to her victory, the seat had been considered reliably Republican.
